A key component of the mission of A BLACK SPACE is oral tradition. "Griot Tell Us..." is a digital archive of stories based on thematic narratives of people of African descent. A Griot is a keeper of culture and the spiritual memory of a people by passing lore through storytelling. For the inaugural year of this program, we're focused on collecting origin stories. These tales told are to demonstrate how we are a kaleidoscope of colors, experiences, and culture. An origin story can be how you came into existence (i.e. the story of your birth), or the origination of mythical, spiritual, or an actual person, place, or thing (i.e.creation stories). We're looking for creative ways to capture the essence of our Black bodies, places, and spaces. Black is not a monolith, so, "Griot Tell Us.... Your Origin Story".
